Energy Prices (early September 2014)

Early September 2014

Electricity:   The continuing shutdown of Heysham 1 and Hartelpool nuclear plants for safety inspections will support prices until October

National Grid has launched a tender for extra generating capacity, a year earlier than originally planned. The extra capacity will help boost supplies over the winter.

Gas: Renewed instability in Libya has disrupted oil exports and continuing tensions in Ukraine suggest that there are few scenarios that won’t lead to disruption this winter.

Long term forecasts suggest the UK and Europe will be warmer than usual for September-November, with colder weather occurring later in the season. This could keep prices down over the early winter season.
